11. What happens if I cannot get my software bundle loaded properly?
Your program in DCT or the School of Engineering and Technology will have individuals who can assist you in getting your software loaded properly on your laptop. However, beginning in the Fall 2010 semester only laptops purchased through one of the approved laptop vendors will be receive this service as we cannot guarantee that we can assist you with any problems that may occur with other brands of laptop when attempting to load software.

NOTE: The School will also not provide any assistance to students whose laptops are found to contain pirated software, personal games, or other programs which are determined to be the cause of the conflict in their operating systems until those obstacles are removed by the student.

12. What happens if I decide to change majors or leave the DCT department?
As the laptop and software bundle you have purchased will belong to you entirely, you may keep or sell them as you desire.

13. Why do I need to still play lab fees when I am now using my personal computer and have purchased my own copy of the software?
This is an excellent question and one that will require a very detailed answer. At IUPUI there are many types of fees that students are required to pay such as the Student fee, the IUPUI Technology fee, and many different Lab fees for courses . The collection and application of the IUPUI Technology and Department Lab fees are probably the two most misunderstood of all fees collected.  The IUPUI Technology fee is used by the university to maintain it digital communication infrastructure. Only a very small amount of this fee is given to the various schools and primarily used to help each school maintain their connections and services with the UITS computer network which every student has access to and uses almost daily.

CGT Lab fees, and similar fees collected for courses in other departments in our School, are used to maintain the infrastructure of our communication system within the School itself. Most students do not know that the computer network operated within the School of Engineering and Technology is independent of the system used in other buildings on campus. Our system also offers many services that are only available to Engineering and Technology students like the CNC Help desk, the servers, hard line Internet connections, wireless availability, and so on which are all maintained funded in our building by lab fees. Lab fees are also designated as a means to pay for the salaries of the CNC faculty and staff members who ensure our system stays active and free of viruses and crashes. Labs fees also pay for new servers, and programs and yearly service fees charged by IT companies for system upgrades, for the upkeep of the lab areas, and for the video projectors and purchase and repair of printers which are available to all students.

There is a misconception among most students that lab fees are regularly used to purchase the hardware and software found in the School’s computer labs. Lab computers are actually funded out of CNC’s yearly equipment budget, and not from lab fees. Likewise, all software purchases are funded either out of grants received from special projects, or a department’s yearly budget, and not from monies collected in the form of lab fees. All lab fees belong solely to the Office of the Dean and not the individual departments who assess them, and used as previously mentioned to maintain our School’s computer network.
