5. What if I am currently a student in one of the DCT programs, and I will not have a laptop by the Fall 2008 semester,
will that affect my studies?

DCT students who are required to have a laptop will have until the Fall 2009 semester to secure one for use in their respective program. All DCT programs will maintain their current software licenses in at least one of the CNC labs until the end of the Spring 2009 semester. This will allow students without laptops to access the old software licenses for 2 semesters after the laptop program officially begins. However, students need to be aware that beginning in the Fall 2008 semester, all lab sessions in the CGT, ART, and INTR programs will only be taught in labs which have been setup for laptops. Following all lectures and demonstrations, students without laptops will need to find space in a lab where the older DCT software packages are available. Students without laptops also need to be aware that all instructors will not be available to teach or consult with students in these other labs. Therefore, students without a laptop will be required to work on their lab projects outside the presence of their instructor.

6. How will I get access to the software programs that I will need on my laptop?
As an IUPUI student there are multiple free software packages which you are entitled to download right onto your laptop that have already been paid by Indiana University. (You can find a complete list of these packages at: http://iuware.iu.edu/)

The School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI has also negotiated several student software bundles that will be specific to your area of study which will be available for purchase at several bookstore locations, or through the department. (The DCT department receives no commission, or any other type of financial advantage, in regards to the sale of any software bundle offered by the vendors.)

Students are welcome to purchase any software packages that are associated with the courses they take from any company of their choice should they desire to do so.

7. If the laptop I already own breaks down during the semester, what are my options?
As in any similar circumstance, if a student chooses to use a laptop they already own, it will be the student’s responsibility to maintain that laptop in good working order. Any damage and associated repairs, loss, or operating problems which may occur in the laptop will be the sole responsibility of the student. It will therefore be the responsibility of the student to have their laptop repaired as needed at their own personal cost, or secure another unit with which they can work. Late work, lost data, and other such problems due to any incident associated with a student’s laptop will not be accepted by instructors. Students are advised to backup their digital files in multiple formats so all data can easily be transferred to another computer thereby assisting the student to stay on schedule with their assignments. Students are also advised to purchase laptops only from reputable computer companies that offer a good warranty program, and have a proven track record of quality service.
